House History
Beck House honours the name of Annie Beck, a proud
Lourdanian and extraordinary Marist Missionary Sister who
spent her life offering medical assistance and building
hospitals in the Paci昀椀c Islands. She attended Lourdes Hill
College in the 1920s and later trained as a nurse. Annie
became professed as a Marist Missionary Sister, Sr Mary
Joseph, in 1941. Soon after, she travelled to the Solomon
Islands to work as a nurse. She established a leprosarium
in Tetere in the Solomon Islands where she worked as a
nurse for many years. In 1956 she was recognised with an
MBE, which she received with simplicity, seeing it as a gift
to the Congregation rather than herself. Annie Beck passed
away on 6 December, 1985 in Sydney, leaving a legacy of
well-run health care facilities for the underprivileged
population of the Philippines, Solomon Islands and Tonga.
House Prayer
Compassionate God,
We give thanks for all teachers and students in
Beck House.
Help us to walk in the footsteps of Annie Beck.
Give us the strength to succeed in our studies and
give us the courage to be independent women.
May the care Annie Beck showed, motivate us to
be stewards of your creation and carers of our
environment.
Help us to demonstrate kindness and humility.
In the spirit of Annie Beck, may we act with courage,
care and compassion.
May her spirit continue to unite our house, so we may
grow together in your light.
We ask this in the name of Our Father,
Amen.

CULLEN
House History
Peggy Cullen was born in Brisbane on 6 September, 1903.
She lived throughout almost all of the twentieth century - a
century of incredible change. But for her some things never
changed - her deep faith and her loyalty to family, the Church
and Lourdes Hill College. She passed away peacefully
in her sleep on 25 May 1995, aged 92 years. Peggy was a
niece of Mother Ignatius (founding staff member and later
Superior of Lourdes Hill College) and also of Archbishop
Duhig. She was one of the 昀椀rst students to be enrolled at
Lourdes Hill College in 1916. In 1926, with the formation of
the Past Pupils Association, Peggy became the founding
President. She also served two later terms. Her work
and devotion to Lourdes Hill College are legendary in the
history of the College. Peggy is responsible for the design
of the 昀椀rst Lourdes Hill College school uniform which
was worn in 1923. This uniform subsequently became the
of昀椀cial uniform for all Good Samaritan Schools throughout
Australia. She was a woman of kindness, great faith and
strong commitment. Her remarkable life was one marked
by self-sacri昀椀ce, discipline and strong loyalties.
House Prayer
Creator God,
Help us to follow in the footsteps of Peggy Cullen.
Let us strive to live as she did: with compassion, care
and a strong sense of community.
Guide us on our path both here at Lourdes Hill
College and throughout our lives,
so we grow as strong, independent women with a
deep sense of faith.
We pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen
